Happy Cotton Candy Day!

Yum!

I love cotton candy, otherwise known as fairy floss back home in Australia. Honestly I prefer the name fairy floss. I mean how awesome does that sound? Just like fairy bread. It is all whimsical and just plain awesome. Okay. Don't mess with the fairies. Anyway back to the topic.

December 7th marks National Cotton Candy Day.

Cotton candy was invented in 1897 by William Morrison and John C. Wharton and first introduced to a wide audience at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 as "Fairy Floss" with great success, selling 68,655 boxes at the then-high $0.25, half the cost of admission to the fair. Fairy floss was renamed to "cotton candy" in the 1920s.

To celebrate this fantastic occasion, here is a recipe I found for Cotton Candy Sugar Cookies

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

•1 cup granulated sugar
•1 cup powdered sugar
•1 cup butter
•1 cup vegetable oil
•2 eggs
•1 teaspoon vanilla
•1 teaspoon salt
•1 teaspoon cream of tartar
•1 teaspoon baking soda
•4-1/4 cups flour
•Extra sugar for pressing cookies (Use red and green for Christmas cookies)

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Cream together the granulated sugar, powdered sugar, butter, and cooking oil. Beat in eggs and vanilla.

Add dry ingredients, (the next four ingredients) and mix to incorporate. Roll dough into small balls about the size of a quarter. With a heavy bottomed crystal vase with a decorative bottom, or other cookie press, dip in sugar to coat well. Smash each ball of dough so they are spread out and flat. Leaving an imprint and sugar. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 10 minutes, until the edges just start to turn slightly brown. Do not bake too long. Cool sugar cookies on the baking sheet briefly then transfer to wire rack to cool the rest of the way.

I'll let you know how they turn out.
